Vegan For A Month – My Experience

So a month ago, actually, five weeks ago now, I decided to trial a vegan diet for a month. You can watch my original Vegan for 1 Week video here. Basically, I was so sick of feeling tired all of the time, and since I’ve tried almost every other diet out there, I figured I’d give this one a shot.

Now it’s been five weeks, and I’m still eating vegan. So what did I find?

  • My energy levels have improved, but not as much as I’d hoped they would. I watched a lot of YouTube videos about people who had just gone vegan, and they all went on and on about how they had super human amounts of energy all of a sudden, well this didn’t happen for me. Still, there’s been improvement, and I’m really happy with that.
  • I didn’t lose any weight. I thought I’d lose some weight for sure, but this wasn’t the case. Keep in mind, that I ate as much as I wanted, and because I was trying to stay on track with the vegan diet, I had lots of vegan cakes and ice creams so I wouldn’t cave and buy the ones with animal products. I also didn’t exercise during this month. That being said, I’m still happy that I was able to eat as much as I wanted, not exercise, and still maintain my weight.
  • My skin didn’t clear up, and my eyes didn’t get whiter. Another thing all the vegan YouTubers go on about is how their skin clears up, and the whites of their eyes clear up and get whiter. Neither of these things happened for me. I still got the normal amount of breakouts that I always get, which isn’t many, but that didn’t change. And my eyes still look exactly the same.
  • The animal rights side of this whole vegan thing is enough to really mess you up. I watched the famous speech by Gary Youofsky on YouTube, the one that is renowned for making people go vegan, and I can see why. I don’t want to go into it all here, and I really don’t want to be preachy, but the stuff that’s going on in the industry is horrifying. I was in tears.
  • The physical stuff that goes in to animal products is gut wrenching. Again, I’m not going to go in to it here, if you’re curious, check out one of Gary’s videos here, it’s different to the one mentioned above, and not as graphic. It’s more about the health effects of eating animal products. Gross content alert: don’t say I didn’t warn you. Dairy industry regulation in America allows one glass of milk to contain one eyedropper (not just one drop, one whole dropper) amount of puss in it. Australia has no regulation. Imagine squeezing a face full of pimples into your milk before drinking it. Now, to be fair, pasteurization occurs, which makes the milk safe to drink, but the puss is still in there. That has completely turned me off milk.

  1. Awesome job! Theres a lot of pretty amazing vegan options out there eh?! One note on the skin thing, I find any processed foods really cause bad breakouts for me. Even though what you are eating is vegan (which is amazing for both the planet, and of course the animals!) the prepackaged veggie burgers & fake cheeses contain a lot of soy and/or processed oils, etc. that can be a little harsh on the body. Theres a bit of a weird theory amongst most that vegan is automatically healthy, definitely not the case. When you are ready and able, try eating solely plant based (not processed or packaged) for even a week, I think you’ll be more likely to see the kind of results you’re looking for!

Either way, you look great! 🙂 ox

    1. Yea, I used to think that vegan equaled healthy, but that’s definitely not the case! This last week I didn’t have any processed foods (except like some soy sauce) and felt heaps better! So I guess that’s my next trial, see how I feel with a cleaned up vegan diet 🙂
